Over the past week I have a little newsletter. We have seen from a newsletter and, as I order my Circular Number of Participants 10-times.
Today I also use this informal mini-series about the newsletters with tips for writing, in fact, a newsletter.
How to get an electronic newsletter
Let me say that much of what I write below could also be applied “as a good blog” (or, indeed, was able to use a variety of communication).
1st Define your goals for the newsletter
This is perhaps the most important thing I say at this point, because practically everything, the rest follows from this.
What do you want to achieve with this newsletter? Are:
• leadership of the traffic in your blog?
• the development of community among your readers?
• Construction of a list of “sell” to?
• Strengthen your brand?
• money for advertising sold in the newsletter?
• Something else?
If you deal with a small number of bloggers various newsletters, it becomes clear that the bloggers are very different take different approaches. For example, Chris Brogan of the newsletter is a lot to offer their subscribers with many new content (it’s worth it, drawing you in social media and the development of online communities). He explores a theme each week. The other is my photography newsletter on the main articles and discussions on my blog and forums in the past week.
The reason why our newsletter are so different that we have different goals.
My main aim is simply to generate traffic on my blog. I find that many of my readers are not using RSS (do something, but there is a high proportion of them who have never heard of it) and my newsletter is a combination of these readers, “subscribe” and it should be recalled the content fresh every week.
Chris with his other hand, seems newsletter to its readers, the more something. It built its brand and builds the community and give us those dealing a feeling of being inside what he thinks (frightening that this sound).
Then work hard on the definition of what you want with your newsletter. There may be many goals (for example, I drive sales of mines subsidiaries from time to time and a sense of community), but your main objective, that the main goal.
2nd Convey what your newsletter is on the potential participants
I have applied for a newsletter a few weeks ago, because on the side of the drawing, he says that he single week, the insider tips for bloggers. But in two weeks, I have contains 6 e-mails and they were all partners Grants (excluding insider “recommendations”).
There is nothing evil in the promotion of subsidiaries in a newsletter, but if you’re promoting it as an original content – to deliver. If your newsletter is largely updates for your blog and an opportunity for the reader in conjunction with the fact that not to hide. It is better to receive less in the participants expect that you must provide that persons to sign to discover that you cheated in their accession to your list.
3rd Creating a voice and coherence
There are no rules when it comes to the kind of writing a newsletter. The way you in almost all the “voice” in a blog you can in almost all formats in a newsletter. Personally, I’ve tried my newsletter “voice” quite similar to my blog (staff, as if I am someone) and I think they are effective (which means that those who have benefited from your blog from your letter of information).
My most important tip for the development of your voice in a newsletter will not chop and change. As in a blog – the readers expect a certain kind of communication from your side and if you change something in a lot so he can away what you perhaps already in terms of connection with readers.
That does not mean that you experiment and / or modify your voice over time but it means that you should try a kind of coherence, what you opt for the reader. This includes the design and the bit rate for your newsletter also. I tried, in one of the more time and find that the readers will benefit from this approach.
A commentary on “hype” – An important to note when it comes to thinking about your “voice” is to prevent the “hyped-up style, it was during the many years of Internet marketing. I am sure that a small number of people with it, but I think that most users of the Internet these days are very suspicious in this style. Use your newsletter relations and talk to people in a personal and build a list, which will continue to work with you (and your confidence) in the long term.
4th Creating Value
Of how people will not subscribe to your RSS feeds from blogs, if they are not in their value a certain kind – people will not subscribe to your newsletter, if not to cover is not that they have.
This “value” and meeting the “demand” may take different forms. It could be, writes the content by insider information that you do not publish, not on the blog, could point out tools and resources and can even be quite simple and stresses, “that’s hot” on your blog. The key is how users work with the different parts of your newsletter (see what I write about the results of the “below) and to their comments. If you do this, you will soon see what they are useful and what they do not.
Important note on the uniqueness of the blog content – I see some bloggers rehashing say what on your blog in the newsletter is not a good strategy. They argue that if they are not new and unique content in your newsletter is not that the readers with not. Although I think that under certain circumstances, it was not always my experience. My biggest newsletter (my photos) has 45000 + subscribers and 90% of this is simply the readers of new messages on the blog and a forum. Again – this blog to its goals. Rehashing the blog of the contents can be “useful” for some readers who have no other way to subscribe to this blog!
5th Content scannable
It is essential scannable in almost all the funds, including online blogs – but when it comes to e-mail I find even more important.
If you HTML e-mails that you can do with the color, images, characters bold, italic, lists, headings, etc. – but if you plain text e-mails, you need a little more creativity . If you have the symbols and signs, CAPS for the topics that make line breaks, etc. look at the page.
Again – monitoring the various techniques and layout, to see what works best.
6th Monitoring of results
According to the newsletter tool that you for your e-mail access, you should be able to have, how people deal with your newsletter. AWeb (the tool that I use) is a wide variety of statistical data, but many other tools newsletter quality. Tools that are more advanced than other reports, but most of them at least to allow the number of people, open your newsletter (which you can help to test and the lines) and what links, click on the number of the people in your messages.
Please note that clicking on the links is a fascinating experience and productive to do. He not only helps you to work on the nature of the drafting of a newsletter (and how to improve), but it gives you an insight into the incredible topics for your readers are interested in playing and more information about the types of language in order to .
I look forward to evaluating these statistics every week and have written repeatedly bodies to monitor the issues that I see many people by clicking on my newsletter.
7th Subject to the lines and the opening of the links issue
When it comes to the most important words blogs that you write your blog’s title (they can tell the difference between your PC as read or not).
When it comes to online via your newsletter really acts as your “title”.
I’m always working on this subject lines work best. I think that some readers seem best suited, if the subject is even every week (as for the e-mail every week and consistency), while others are blind in the same thing every week.
I would be interested in your thoughts on what is best.
Another thing to note is that what you mentioned in your newsletter is almost always higher “conversion” is that what you below. Connections, in your introductory paragraph of more clicked, the subsidiary of campaigns that you are at the forefront of the Alliance to better convert the content that you must continue. It is the same concept as the content of “above the fold” on a website – What’s new beginning, the eyeballs!
8th Use a reliable service newsletter
It is a lesson that I learned that lasts. In my first days of the newsletter, I used a free newsletter service called Zookoda. I’m not sure how it performs in those days worked well, although it is slowly beginning to deteriorate, with regard to the way he was reliable. E-mails and did not leave the information sheets, which by those who signed was always less per week.
Conversion to AWeb been improvements in the way many e-mails were delivered (and I mean drastic). The “cost” to use a free service born May Monetary Union does not have been (not) – but it was important because it means that I lack of connection with thousands of readers each week.
9th Using double opt-services for the newsletter
It is very important, with never a newsletter that the applications of two optical techniques to the participants (ie the person needs to sign and certify that the subscription to an e-mail to them). You can create your brand of terrible damage caused by the admission of persons into the newsletter list without permission or buying lists of e-mail addresses. With double opt-in systems do not reduce your actual number of participants and the causes of headaches – but it is important.
Also – the people an opportunity to get out of your newsletter and use a service, including your postal address in the circular. These things are the law in many parts of the world and if you do not respect you run a risk, not to harm your reputation with potential readers, but to the consequences against the law.
3 Bonus Round newsletter tips from Chris Brogan
I used Chris Brogan newsletter as an example above for the idea that I am a decrease him to see what it is to give recommendations for the newsletter of developers in the grass. Here is what he replied with:
• Enter useful information about new. * * People say they love new, but what he really wants is the action.
• Chunk the text of the newsletter, so it is very easy to read. It is very easy.
• Write it personably, because it promotes interaction between the two directions, and if your site has a newsletter intends to help you in both directions to feel is a chance for someone you give permission to talk business.
If you have a newsletter / s – what recommendations could you add?
